| Digital Art ProgramsBoth mouth users and tablet users can use these programs. (Yes, i'ts possible to color on the computer with just a mouse.) A tablet is like a special board and pen you can draw with that draws directly into your computer. It has pressure sensitivity so the harder you press down, the thicker the line would be. This makes digital coloring or making clean lineart a bit easier. Wacom TabletsWidely Used: Adobe Photoshop (PS) Open Canvas (oC) Corel Painter (painter) Paint Shop Pro (PSP) <-not used as much Free: Open Canvas 1.1: http://home.cwru.edu/~nxl25/downloads/opencanvas.exenewer versions of oC are available for 30day free trial on www.portalgraphics.net.The Gimp: http://www.gimp.org/Artrage: http://www.ambientdesign.com/artrage.htmlDeep Paint 2.0: http://www.download.com/Deep-Paint/3000-2191_4-10398243.htmlI think there's a free version of PS somewhere for people to download. If anyone knows the link, tell me. pchat-online program where you can paint and chat with others at the same time on a single page (google it. there's tons of servers) oekaki- paintBBS, shi-painter. online program where you paint alone (google it. there's tons of servers) So far, I've used PS, oC, pchat, and oekaki. I've barely touch corel painter and have never used psp, gimp, artrage, and deep paint. | |

| I have a question about oekaki and PaintBBS. Is it possible to download the program onto my computer so I could use it without going on the internet? Or is it strictly for online forums and that kind of thing? It'd be nice if I could have it on my computer so I could draw and save whenever I want privately... | |

| I see. Thank you. Oh, by the way, is there a function in OpenCanvas that's similar to PaintBBS's masking functions? I can't seem to find it... | |

| I believe masking is also used in photoshop. It's to edit a specific part of the picture. Like in manga editing,, we use quickmask and then use the brush to "paint" the area we want to edit. then we exit quickmask and click inverse and that area will be selected, thus allowing us to edit the specific area without distracting the rest of the picture. Correct me if I'm wrong. I beleive there are other uses for it as well, but this is how editors for mangas use it. I'm learning how to edit scans ^^;; | |

Like say you wanna color hair without having the color overlap the lining you did for the hair; click masking and then select the color and just color, and the lining won't be affected! Its so fun! I also like using tones! I never did get layers...

| oh no, masking is suppose to mask the area where your brush touches etc. so that it won't be affected. The way I explained it was that I WANT to affect the area I touch so I quickmasked it and then I use the inverse button to make everything else be unaffected while I affect the area I touched I like how Photoshop can do so many things lols | |

| eek i have to play with the mask tool.. though i don't see why manga translators have to use it. can't they just erase the japanese text and type in the english? x_X - YinlerthaiC. wrote:

well for layers, think of it this way. if you draw something on one layer and make a second layer then you can't affect affect/change/erase what you drew on the first layer when you're on the second layer. so, if you separate lineart and different parts of coloring into different layers, it makes life a lot easier. if you create a multiply layer, then the drawings from underneath will show through. from your descriptions of the masking tool, it sounds similar to layering...except i still think layering is better xD layers have more functions on them such as decreasing the opacity of a whole layer. in oC there aren't that many choices as to what type of layers. if you get to PS, there are normal, mulitply, overlay and other types of layers that have different effects. mmm...hope I'm being clear... x_x;;

| Hmm...I think I'm starting to get it now. I'm gonna keep on practicing and playing around with PS and PaintBBS and OC so I can get better at dawing on the comp with my mouse. Practice practice! Thank you for all the info. | |

| lol, you're confusing typesetting with cleaning mangas. Typesetting is on another layer, and we do just erase the japanese text behind it. Cleaning mangas of dust and shadows is another problem that requires inverse masking if the scanner is horrible. | |
